Free play: West Windsor Community Park

Community Park is the township's main active-recreation park, 123 acres with playgrounds, basketball courts, dog parks, a skate park, the West Windsor Water Works aquatic center and sports fields. The township's park page lists two tennis courts and two pickleball courts. Pickleheads, a user-maintained directory, lists four outdoor asphalt pickleball courts there with permanent lines and nets and describes them as free. The difference may reflect shared or newly added courts; either way, this is the easiest no-cost game in town. The township's page does not mention lights, so plan on daylight play.

Lighted courts: Mercer County Park

The Mercer County Park Commission runs four pickleball courts at its tennis center, 1638 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor. Pickleheads describes them as dedicated asphalt courts with permanent lines and nets and lights. The county's 2025 rules:

  • ID cards (tennis/pickleball/platform): $80 for Mercer County adult residents, $40 for juniors and seniors, $120 for non-residents.
  • Court fees: no charge on outdoor courts for ID holders; $8 per person for non-ID players at Mercer County Park.
  • Booking: 90-minute court time; ID holders can reserve up to three days ahead through the county's CourtReserve system, others one day ahead.
  • Hours: Monday–Thursday 7:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m.; Friday–Sunday 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m.

More on the full facility is on the Mercer County Park Tennis Center page.

Indoor play

For winter and rainy days, the main indoor pickleball option in the township is the private club at 99 Clarksville Road, listed as Windsor Tennis Club / Advantage Tennis Club, with nine indoor hard courts. Directories list it as members only with reservations through the club. The indoor courts page covers what else is available.

New to pickleball?

Pickleball, invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, is played with solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball on a court roughly the size of a badminton court. USA Pickleball's rules summary covers the essentials:

  • The serve is hit underhand and diagonally, with one attempt per serve; a drop serve is allowed.
  • Two-bounce rule: the return of serve and the next shot must each bounce before being hit.
  • Non-volley zone ("kitchen"): no volleys while standing within 7 feet of the net or on that line.
  • Games usually go to 11, win by 2, and only the serving side scores under traditional scoring.

Bring your own paddle and balls to the township courts; at the county center, check the reservation system before driving over.
